Halloween Week – Scary vs. Politics – What Movie To Go See ….

October 29th, 2012 at 1:05 pm by under The Movie Guru, Uncategorized

Hey Fellow Movie Fans!  It’s Halloween Week and I just know that many of us are going to dress up or have dressed up in their costumes to go to parties and go Trick-or-Treating this coming Wednesday.  I was at an 80s Music costume party for one of my sisters on Saturday night …. we watched the Alabama football game (ROLL TIDE!) then we continued to party the night away.  I gave my sister (Donna) an Extra Special treat for her birthday … as a Big Brother should …. and I have another sister (Joy) whose birthday is coming up this Saturday so it will be time for Another Special treat for her after Halloween from her Big Brother …. Just have to share the love.

Now a lot of you went to the movies this past weekend and you would think that a “scary” movie would top the Box Office sales;  but we have to remember that this is an election year …. and with all of our minds trying to see if Barack Obama or Mitt Romney will be our next President a “political” film took the top spot and it is getting a lot of buzz …. Can you say “Oscar Nominations”?

ARGO took the number 1 spot.  This film starring and directed by Ben Afleck is based upon actual events that led to the real-life rescue of six U.S. embassy workers during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis, made nearly $12.4 million this weekend, according to Sunday studio estimates.  The scary movies that are out that you though might be on top fell somewhat short.  the Number 2 movie is more family friendly scary …. the animated flick, Hotel Transylvania, brought in the family audience market for a spooky good time.  The star studded film Cloud Atlas opened up in third place and in 4th and 5th places we had a couple more scary motion picture outing to make the grade ….. Paranormal Activity 4  &  Silent Hill: Revelation 3-D.  Silent Hill, by the way, was tied for 5th place with action thiller Taken 2.

Well, what does that mean for the “Scary Movie” or Horror genre?  For one thing, LIFE is Scary right now!  We are always reporting about all the crime and scandal … The Presidential Election …. that it’s hard to get someone to the movies for a good fright.  It also doesn’t help that for the most part if you wait a few months you can see these film at home with ON DEMAND from your Cable or Satillite service provider or on Netflix through your PC or Mac or XBOX 360 (me) or PS3 or on iTunes.  It’s just the timing and this year with the election and people worrying about if they will have a job after this is all over on November 6th (Go Vote!) I think that most people really didn’t want to go out and spend a little money on getting scared in a movie theater when they are frighten enough as it is with who will be the next POTUS (President of the United States) – Politics; Gotta Love It

Well, That The View Domestically Here In The States – the rest of the world …. well, that’s more political than movie wise so back to business…..

After you have done all of your Trick-or-Treating and got your fill of chocolate and candy bars and other goodies …. it will be ….. NOVEMBER!  And BOY OH BOY …. there are gonna be some GOOD movies to come out just in time for the 2012 Holiday Movie Season.  Here is one movie I highly recommend to check out …. if you have kids and/or a big video game fan like me you know where I’m getting at.   This weekend go see Wreck-It Ralph.  It’s Animated!  All-Star Voice Cast!  And … It’s Disney!  ‘Nuff Said

CHECK OUT THIS LINK TO THE TRAILER OF THIS SOON TO BE CLASSIC DISNEY PIC courtesy of Yahoo! Movies ….. <div><iframe frameborder=”0″ width=”576″ height=”324″ src=”http://d.yimg.com/nl/movies/site/player.html#vid=30520182&repeat=0&browseCarouselUI=hide&startScreenCarouselUI=hide&shareUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fmovies.yahoo.com%2Fmovie%2Fwreckit-ralph%2Ftrailers%2Fwreck-it-ralph-theatrical-trailer-30520182.html”></iframe></div>

Also in November get ready for Lincoln, Life of Pi, Hitchcock, Rise of the Guardians ….. And i can not forget these two Big franchise movie sagas …. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2  &  Skyfall – Yes!   James Bond is Back!

Come back online for my next blog entry when I CELEBRATE 50 Years of “Bond, James Bond“  –  ”Agent 007″ himself over the years on film …. and there is a chance that you can go see SKYFALL for FREE Next Week.  Log Back In To Find!

This is Marcus Jackson, the FOX 10 / CW 55 Resident Movie Guru!  Go out this Wednesday and have a Safe & Happy Halloween!  And if you get the chance go out and catch a movie with friends and family …. I know I will next month …. see you there.

It’s Cam Newton against Cameron Newton

October 24th, 2012 at 1:19 pm by under FOX10 Sports, Jess Sports

We have seen it before, the elite rookie NFL quarterback defying all statistical odds, winning on and off the field with rookie of the year honors, pro bowl invitations, and lucrative endorsements. The Sophomore season turns into the second year slump, and it is less than impressive. The athlete’s rookie accomplishments are in question leaving fans, teammates, and franchises wanting more.

Cam Newton, to many, is now falling into this same slump. The Carolina Panthers quarterback is leading his team to another losing season, (1-5), which is the worst in the NFC. This is after Newton vowed to carry the team on his back and take the franchise into its glory years. Newton is clearly feeling the pressure after not walking the walk.

The outrage surrounding Newton does not stem from a lackadaisical attitude on the field or in practice. Nor does it stem from Newton’s lack of overall talent or will to win . There is an outrage because of  Newton’s attitude, lack of leadership and his inability to hold himself together mentally. Need examples? What about sideline pouting, showing disrespect toward the media or not speaking with the media at all, rushing to the locker room after losses, or unsportsmanlike conduct? The Panthers’ horrible offensive play, have added fuel to critics’ fires.

Last season, a confused Drew Brees was spotted on the field, post-game, looking for Newton; allegedly to shake his hand in a  sign of good sportsmanship after the game. Unfortunately for Brees, Newton had already left the field and headed into the locker room to pout over the Panthers’ home loss to the Saints. Ironically, this season, the Panthers’ sole win is a 35-27 home victory over the New Orleans Saints.

After a gut wrenching 19-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Newton’s level of frustration and judgement was exposed, when Newton referred to a female sportswriter as, “sweetheart” while attempting to answer her question about the game’s results. Newton also told media during the same press conference  that he would put out a “suggestion box” in hopes that someone will give ideas on how the Panthers can improve offensively and win games.

Earlier in the season, The Charlotte Observer mocked Newton in an editorial cartoon by depicting Newton in his famed ”Superman” touchdown pose, but not with an “S” on his chest, but a “Hello Kitty” drawing instead. The Cartoon came just after the Panthers’ loss to the N.Y. Giants. It was a game in which Newton was widely criticized for his inappropriate “Superman” celebration following a rushing touchdown in the third quarter. The problem with the celebration was that the Carolina Panthers were down 23-7, a comfortable lead for Manning and the Giants, since they dominated the entire game. Eventually there would be no more touchdown celebrations, and the Panthers were routed 35-7. Newton’s stats were equally unimpressive, as he went 16-of-30 for 242 yards and three interceptions.

After the loss, Newton was spotted pouting on the sidelines to the disdain of his teammates. Later, according to The Charlotte Observer, an outspoken Steve Smith scolded the sophomore QB, saying; “I told him, ”You can get some mental reps or you can sit on that bench and sulk”.  -Charlotte Observer. Newton has also been accused by other teammates of adding negative energy to the huddle.

The Panthers’ loss to the Cowboys was the fourth time of six games this season, that Newton led his team in rushing. despite a trio of overpaid, unproductive running backs including Williams, Stewart, and Tolbert. Newton is the quarterback and the leader of that team. He is required to display leadership, poise, professionalism, humility, and most importantly mental strength.

Ultimately, Cameron Newton is a winner who lacks the mental capacity to deal with losing. He is mentally broken at this point and doesn’t understand why what worked last year, is not working this year. He is on a downhill path of mental destruction. Obviously, I don’t have access to his “suggestion box”, but if I did, I would tell him that the changes need to begin with himself, and what worked last year will never work this year because  opposing NFL coordinators have his number. The time has come in which Newton must re-evaluate his game plan by identifying coverage patterns and schemes, and adjust his game plan accordingly. Now, may also be the time for Newton to embrace the idea of a mind coach, the idea he so vehemently denied in September, if not for the sake of his NFL career, but to save himself, from himself.

She came!

October 21st, 2012 at 11:11 pm by under Sarah Wall - Monday Moms, Uncategorized

Words cannot describe the amount of joy and love that filled my heart when I saw my little girl.  I never knew the human heart could hold so much love.

Baby Phoenix Rae entered the world October 2, 2012.  She weighed 7 pounds and 14 ounces…not too far from the 8.2 pounds the doctors estimated she would weigh.

My husband and I have an amazing 5-year-old son named Sidney.  Phoenix is our second child, but the pregnancy was not planned.  Sure…all of our family members were hoping we would have more than one child, but I had other plans.  I guess God had other plans, too.

They say every pregnancy is different and boy was that the truth for me.  With my son, my pregnancy was pretty easy…I didn’t have any morning sickness, cramping or discomfort.  My biggest complaint was the weight gain.  I believe most women gain between 20-35 pounds.  I packed on 70 pounds!  Seriously, I resembled the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man from the movie, “Ghostbusters.”

This time around I gained 47 pounds, but I was terribly sick.  Quite frankly, I don’t know why they call it “morning sickness.” because for me it was all day, afternoon, and night.  And it wasn’t just nausea but heart burn, too, and nothing provided relief.

Our son was born in Charlotte, NC.  The amount of love and support we had from friends and the community was unexpected and so very kind.  But it’s never easy being away from family.  So this time I decided to have our baby in Michigan, the state my husband and I are both from.

I couldn’t have asked for a better birthing experience.  In fact, the hardest part about my delivery was being away from my son.  For safety reasons, I had to arrive in Michigan three weeks prior to my due date.  That meant being away from my son, so that he wouldn’t miss more than a week of school while we waited for the baby to arrive.  Thank goodness she came early.

Everything went according to plan…my birthing plan that is.  I wanted to see the crowning, so my doctor provided a mirror at the foot of the bed so I could see everything he saw.  Then when my little girl was far enough through the birth canal where I could grab her by the arms, my doctor guided my hands toward her shoulders and I pulled her out and onto my chest.  It was the greatest thrill.  We laid there for what felt like an eternity, but it was probably more like two minutes.  She’s perfect…so sweet, so beautiful, and healthy.

So Why Phoenix?

Several people have asked me why I chose the name Phoenix.  Well, the answer is simple: I love Greek mythology and the Phoenix is a sacred firebird that never dies.  But according to Google.com, the Phoenix is a person or thing regarded as uniquely remarkable in some respect…I like that too.

As I am writing this blog my little bambini is lying next to me.  She looks so peaceful, innocent and strong.  Whether she was a surprise, planned or unplanned – I am so grateful to have her…so eager to see the beautiful, remarkable lady she will become one day.

NWA Conference Day Three

October 15th, 2012 at 5:26 pm by under FOX10 Stormtracker Weather

Our third day at the conference focused again on weather system training from Weather Central. We discussed the availability of new products due and also learned about changes in weather data within the last year. This presentation was very technical, but also very helpful in improving daily workflow!

After lunch, I got a chance to see what is available in terms of HD live cameras. Cell phone and wi-fi technology have helped to make establishing a live camera feed much easier form remote locations.

Finally, we had an opportunity to participate in a one-on-one session. Most of my questions involved learning more about the latest software platform “Fusion”. I also got some tips on implemented daily hour-by-hour forecasts to be included in my presentation in the near future.

And for dinner, I followed Madison native and Studio Ten host Joe Emer’s advice. It was a fine meal of Green Bay Chili topped with onions, cheese and sour cream. As a side dish, I sample a Wisconsin favorite: Fried Beer Battered Cheese Curds!

NWA Workshop Day Two

October 15th, 2012 at 5:23 pm by under FOX10 Stormtracker Weather

Our second day started off with a keynote address from veteran broadcast meteorologist Tom Skilling of WGN in Chicago. Skilling is an extremely popular broadcaster whose unique presentation is a dominant element in the daily newscast. His presentation style goes against the grain of traditional television weather forecasts. Skilling’s success is attributed to his ability to teach the audience about the daily forecast in informative and compelling way.

Madison, Wisconsin is also the home of our provider for weather graphics and software through Weather Central Inc, recently acquired by WSI. Because the conference was located in Weather Central’s “backyard,” we got in a full day of training on Monday. The morning sessions focused on how to use our software to keep viewers updated on Facebook and Twitter with fresh content and images. Our StormTracker radar display is also a Weather Central product. We learned about the latest software releases and improvements. We also had a more specific discussion on how to implement Dual-Pol data within our system in the coming year.

I also got a unique chance to tour the University of Wisconsin Institute of Discovery building, which was designed as an energy efficient workspace. Link: https://fpm-www3.fpm.wisc.edu/cpd/UWBuildsGreen/WisconsinInstituteforDiscovery/tabid/195/Default.aspx We enjoyed a nice dinner there with other broadcast meteorologists from around the country.

NWA Workshop Day One

October 15th, 2012 at 5:04 pm by under FOX10 Stormtracker Weather

I recently took a continuing education trip to Wisconsin in order to catch up on the latest  in forecasting techniques and computer technology. After arriving in Madison on Saturday evening to temperatures in the thirties, I got a full day in Sunday at the National Weather Association (NWA) workshop.

Our first day consisted of a broadcasters workshop designed specifically for on-air meteorologists. The morning sessions focused on communication techniques. We also reviewed the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak and discussed severe weather coverage.

In the afternoon, a good bit of time was spent learning about the new Dual-Pol radar upgrade coming to our area around February 1st, 2013.  National Weather Service radar sites will update to this new form of radar which will give us a much more accurate picture of precipitation and severe storms. The radar beams will now be able to look at an object both horizontally and vertically.  We will be able to detect large hail in severe storms much better. We also will have a more accurate way to determine rainfall rates in flash flooding situations. For the first time, we will be able to confirm tornado debris signatures within a storm, helping greatly in the tornado warning process. We will also be able to do a better job of determining precipitation types in winter weather events. And, we can identify false echoes due to bird migrations and chaff (armed forces releases). However, the standard reflectivity will not change much.

Finally, I attended a social media boot camp sponsored by the Weather Channel.  The television industry is rapidly changing! Most of us are now using smart phones and social networking platforms throughout the day. This seminar focused on how to use Facebook and Twitter to interact with viewers and promote newscasts.

Gene Chizik; “déjà vu” on the plains

October 14th, 2012 at 7:39 pm by under FOX10 Sports, Jess Sports

Now more than ever, the controversial image of the angry Auburn fan booing Athletic Director Jay Jacobs and screaming out, “We want a leader not a loser; 5-19 is not what we need. No Chizik. No,” is playing out over and over in the minds of the Auburn faithful. Fans and critics alike are dismayed at the exceptionally poor performance of the Auburn football program this season.

The Tigers are now 1-5 on the season after a heart breaking loss to long-time SEC underachiever Ole Miss, who broke their own 16-game SEC deficit with the win.

Just two years ago, Auburn won their first National Championship in over 53 years. That year was masked by the rare athleticism of a guy named Cam Newton, the consistency of effective role players and the fast paced offensive genius of Gus Malzahn. Excellent teamwork and resilient team chemistry allowed the Tigers to overcome a stifling secondary and go on to win the 2010 BCS National Championship.

Today the fairy tale is long over and Auburn has a losing record, even worse the Tigers are now at the bottom of the SEC brotherhood. Continued success has been a rarity since clinching the crystal ball, and Gene Chizik has lost the support of his fan base, as many are calling for his job. Chizik is now 9-9 (.500) since that perfect season, and 22-33 if you date back to his less than perfect days as the head coach of Iowa State.

Gene Chizik was 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State, which outraged the Auburn community and caused doubt in the coach’s ability to compete in arguably the deepest conference in college football.

Chizik’s tenure at Iowa State is clouded not only by a losing record of 5-19, but a replacement that has succeeded the embattled coach, with upsets against then-No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 22 Texas, and No. 19 Texas Tech. The Iowa State Cyclones are currently 5-1 on the season. These stats only add fire to the controversy surrounding the Gene Chizik era in Auburn.

Right now the only hope for Gene Chizik and his coaching staff’s future is to preserve what they can from this season – namely the teams unity, morale and respect for each other. Only then could they possibly save Chizik’s job and salvage what’s left of an embarrassing season. Where is the curator Jay Jacobs in all of this?

Tragedy on campus

October 11th, 2012 at 4:06 pm by under FOX10 News, Uncategorized

I just watched a young man die.

A number of reporters and photographers gathered at the Mobile County Sheriff’s office to watch the silent, surveillance video of the last few moments of Gil Collar’s life, the USA student who was shot and killed by a campus police officer.

According to the time code on the video we saw, at 1:23:15, Collar, who was naked, walked up to the front door of the USA Campus Police station.  He pulled on the locked door and then walked out of frame.

At 1:23:38 he is back in frame, pounding at least 6 times on the window on the front of the police station.

At 1:24:01, an officer comes out of the door of the police station, weapon drawn, looking left and right and seeing Collar in front of him.

Collar started chasing after the officer, forcing him to run backward.  Collar drops onto his knees at one point, and quickly moves toward the officer, apparently taunting him.

They run around the front of the police station to a grassy area and that’s where you can see Collar drop to his knees.  Sheriff Sam Cochran, who was narrating some of the video explained that was the point where Collar was hit by one shot.  I did not see any flash accompanying the shot.

A dispatcher who was inside the police station rushes out, sees what it happening and runs back inside.

A second officer arrives.  Collar gets up and starts running again.  He then runs away from the officers, falls to his knees again, tries to get up, then collapses at 1:25:05 on the tape.

A third officer arrives after Collar is down.
